The Routing Steps Page of the Bill of Materials Maintenance function allows you to set up the steps, authorized labor and machine resources, and define other settings required for the production of the parent item in the bill of materials.
To set up routing steps in the bill of materials, perform the following steps in this page:
1.In the Route grid, enter the jobs that occur at each step of manufacturing the parent item. Perform the following in this grid:
1.1. Activate a new blank line in the grid by clicking the Append row to end button. Each blank line is automatically assigned a Step # which is in multiples of 10, starting value is 10. |
For subsequent grid entries, you may click the Append row to end button to activate a new blank line in the grid or click the Insert row before current button to insert a blank line above the currently selected line in the grid. Each blank line is automatically assigned a Step # which is in multiples of 10, starting value is 10.
To delete a line in the grid, select the line that you want to delete; then, click the Delete button in the grid toolbar. |
1.2. Enter in the Description field a brief text that describes the task(s) that occurs at this step. For example, sanding, assembly, quality control, etc. |
1.3. Enter in the Work Center field the designated work area where the currently selected step is performed. |
1.4. Enter in the Start Date/End Date fields the validity dates the settings defined in this step of the bill of materials are used in the work order production. The default value is the current system date. |
2.In the Labor and Machine grid, define the labor resource and machines that are required for the selected step in the Route grid. Perform the following:
2.1. Activate a new blank line in the grid by clicking the Append row to end button. |
For subsequent grid entries, you may click the Append row to end button to activate a new blank line in the grid or click the Insert row before current button to insert a blank line above the currently selected line in the grid.

2.2. Enter in the Type field the labor grade or machine component type that will be used at the step specified in the Route grid. Alternatively, click the list box button to select from the drop-down list the labor grade or machine component type. |
2.3. In the Labor Grade/Machine # field, enter the specific labor grade or the machine number that will be used at the step specified in the Type field. Alternatively, click the list box button to select from the drop-down list the labor grade or machine number. |
2.4. Enter in the Required Quantity field the quantity of the labor grade or machine that will be used at the step specified in the Type field. For Labor Grades, it accepts only positive whole numbers while it accepts only "1" for machines. |
2.5. Enter in the Time field the time it takes for the specified labor grade or machine to perform its designated task during the selected Step # in the Route grid. Value is entered as hours:minutes as in "01:23". |
2.6. Enter in the Efficiency % field the labor grade or machine's performance efficiency rate. Default value is 100.0000 and only accepts positive values. |
2.7. In the Start Date and End Date fields, enter the inclusive date when the labor resource or machine is expected to be used at this step in the production process. |
3.In the Step Instructions area, enter the instructions for the selected step in the Route grid. The instructions you enter in this bill of materials record will be carried over into the Routing Steps page of the Create Work Order function.
4.Specify in the Required Steps field the routing steps that must be done by itself or simultaneously with another step. Click the Ellipsis [...] button beside the field to display the List of [Steps] window. In this window, mark the checkboxes that correspond to the step number(s) that you want to be performed simultaneously; then, click OK.

5.Review in the Next Steps fields the Step number(s) to which the selected step is assigned as one of the Required Steps. This field is always empty for the last Step # in the Route grid.
6.Mark the Allow Overlap checkbox if you want the selected step in the Route grid to overlap with the next step. The overlap rate depends on the value entered in the Overlap Rate field.

7.Mark the Allow Rework checkbox if you want to permit any rework to the selected Step # in the Route grid; otherwise, leave this checkbox unmarked.
8.The Outsourced checkbox is read-only and value comes from the Outsourced checkbox in Work Center Maintenance for the work center assigned to the Step # selected in the Route grid. If marked, the following is displayed:
8.1. Review the default value in the Vendor # field which comes from the Vendor # field in the Work Center Maintenance for the work center assigned to the Step # selected in the Route grid. This is for reference use only. |
8.2. Accept or amend the default value in the Item # field which comes from the Item # field in Work Center Maintenance for the work center assigned to the Step # selected in the Route grid. This field can be amended if the Purchase Order module is activated and the Vendor # field is not empty. |
8.3. Enter in the Outsource Cost field the estimated cost of availing third-party services for performing the Step # selected in the Route grid. |
8.4. Mark or unmark the Allow Outsource Change Order checkbox. Marking this checkbox allows third-party work centers to make changes in order for the Step # selected in the Route grid. |
9.In the Scheduling area, enter in the respective fields the time it takes to perform the following:
oSetup Time/Calculate Setup by
Enter in this field the amount of time needed to set up the machine or labor resource assigned to the Step # selected in the Route grid. Click the List box button beside the Calculate Setup by field and select the option: Order or Batch Size if the Batch Size is Known checkbox is marked. Format is entered as hours:minutes (00:00). |
oWait Time/Calculate Wait by
Enter in this field the amount of time needed to wait for the item units to be received (if outsourced) or moved to another work center assigned to the Step # selected in the Route grid. Click the List box button beside the Calculate Wait by field and select the option: Order or Batch Size if the Batch Size is Known checkbox is marked. Format is entered as hours:minutes (00:00). |
oCycle Time
Enter in this field the amount of time required to complete one cycle of the Step # selected in the Route grid from start to finish. Format is entered as hours:minutes. |
oMove Out Time/Calculate Move Out by
Enter in this field the amount of time required to move the item units out of the work center assigned to the Step # selected in the Route grid. Click the List box button beside the Calculate Move Out by field and select the option: Order or Batch Size if the Batch Size is Known checkbox is marked. Format is entered as hours:minutes (00:00). |
oTeardown Time/Calculate Teardown by
Enter in this field the amount of time required to teardown the labor grade(s)/machine(s) to the Step # selected in the Route grid. Click the List box button beside the Calculate Teardown by field and select the option: Order or Batch Size if the Batch Size is Known checkbox is marked. Format is entered as hours:minutes (00:00). |
