You can set up an unlimited number of substitute inventory items for each inventory item. This feature is useful when you run out of a particular inventory item or its on-hand quantity is insufficient to cover the quantity ordered by the customer. You can then suggest to the customer an inventory item that is quite similar to the ordered inventory item.
You can set up different substitute items for a particular inventory item through the Substitute Inventory Maintenance function. Once you set up substitute items for a particular inventory item, you can then select from the available list in case a particular inventory item is unavailable.
After you have entered the original inventory item in the line item grid of either the AR Invoice and Sales Order functions of the Accounts Receivable and Sales Order modules, you can access an inventory item’s substitute inventory item list by clicking the Substitute button in the Line Items grid of those two functions.
