Kitting

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

With the Kitting module, you can assemble various inventory items to create one unit of inventory item for sale to your customers.  Kitting provides you the flexibility to meet the demands of your customers and increase the marketing edge of your products through customized assembly of various inventory items.  This module works with Inventory Control, Accounts Receivable and Sales Order.

This module provides additional features as follows:

Automatic system assembly of kit items during shipment of kit items

Manual assembly of kit items before shipment of kit items

Customize standard inventory components of kit items when creating sales order to customers

Below are some examples of kit inventory items:

a kit can include an aerosol can of cleaning fluid and a soft cloth to use together to clean a computer monitor

a printer, monitor, keyboard, and CPU that can be hooked together by the user into a complete computer system

wheels, pedals, a handle bar, seat, and frame that can be assembled at home into a bicycle.

The following are the types of kit inventory items in the system:

Kit item requiring prebuild

This type of kit item requires the assembly of its component items through the Build Kit Item function based on the standard kit formula set up for the kit item, before shipment to customers.  You can set up this particular kit item by marking the Require Prebuild option in the Kitting area of the Settings tab in the Inventory Maintenance function window.  Building this kit item decreases the quantities of its component inventory items and increases the kit item quantities.

Kit item not requiring prebuild

This type of kit item can be shipped automatically to customers based upon the component inventory items set up in its standard kit formula. The system simultaneously builds and ships the kit item in one function window using either the Ship Sales Order  or Create Invoice function. You can set up this particular kit item by unmarking the Require Prebuild checkbox in the Kitting area in the Settings tab of the Inventory Maintenance function window.

Customized kit inventory item

This type of kit item is either a kit item requiring prebuild or not, which is customized by adding, deleting or varying the standard kit formula when creating customer sales order.  The customized kit formula does not affect the kit formula for the affected kit inventory item.

Integration with Other Modules

The Kitting module can be integrated with the following modules:

Lot Control

Lot control numbers can be assigned to groups of kit inventory item units, in addition to assigning a specific kit number to each unit. For example, all of the kit inventory item units for the assembly of a computer workstation packaged on a particular day, by a particular person, or using particular parts, can be assigned a particular lot number.

Sales Order

Kit inventory items can be included in a sales order. It can either be a kit item requiring prebuild, kit item not requiring prebuild or a customized kit item.

Accounts Receivable

Kit items requiring prebuild and kit items not requiring prebuild can be included in sales invoices.
