Account Segment Value

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Account Segment values are number or alphanumeric values that, when put together, make up a GL Account ID. The number of account segments that comprise the GL Account ID and each segment's description (ID), length, and type are initially defined during the creation of the company. These segments can later be modified using the Redefine GL Account Segment function in the General Ledger module.

Account Segment Values provide the necessary building blocks for creating GL Account IDs. The system requires you to specify a major segment.  You may or may not be required to set up a fund segment depending upon whether or not you have set the company up for Fund Accounting.   Depending upon your internal monitoring and reporting requirements, you may or may not need to set up other minor segments.  Setting up account segments allows for the effective evaluation of each business units’ operations within a company and the company’s operations as a whole.

Example: Assume that during the creation of the company you set up the following segments:

Major segment with a descriptive ID “Account #” and length of six numeric characters

Two minor segments with descriptive IDs’ “Division” and “Department” and you assigned the segments’ length of three and two alphanumeric characters, respectively

You can set up the following segment values and combine these segment values to create the following GL Account IDs:
